profile
thematic domain profilerepresentation within a data category specification of any one of the thematic domains with which a data category is associated
NOTE A data category may have several thematic domain profiles, indicating that it is used by several thematic domains. Until a data category specification is assigned to a thematic domain profile (associated to a TDG), the profile value is set to -undecided-. If there isn't any profile available that fits your DC assign it to the -not available- profile, and consider to contact the DCR Board to establish a TDG for the missing thematic domain.
ISO 12620:2009 specifies that the DCR shall associate each data category with one or several profile values corresponding to the thematic domains where the data category is relevant (for instance, /partOfSpeech/ is relevant for both terminology and lexicography).
Adding a Profile to an Existing Data Category Specification
If a user initiates the creation of a data category specification (DC) that has the same data category name as an existing data category, ISOcat will prompt the user to examine the existing DC in order to determine whether the definition for this DC is appropriate for the new thematic domain under development. If this is the case, it is preferable to add the new thematic domain to the profile for that DC rather than to create a new DC.
The process for adding a new profile to a DC currently involves a number of steps.
- Create a private group including yourself and the owner of the data categories you want to use. This group is strictly for the purpose of cross-editing profile information.
- Create a new DCS including both the complex and the simple data categories you want to use.
For instance, one could decide to add /grammatical gender/and /grammatical number/ from the Morphosyntax group to the Terminology group. You may include a different set of values in the second group if the needs of that Thematic Domain differ from those of the first. You must include any of the values you want to include in your profile in the editable DCS.
- Save this new DCS and then change its scope value to indicate that it is shared by the private group you created in step 1 above.
- You can now add a new profile to the DCs in question. You must do this for all the complex and simple DCs you want to use. ISOcat will prompt you to create a new conceptual domain for your thematic domain profile. You should do so, whether you are using the same values or different ones. In the example below, Morphosyntax and Terminology use the same DC for /grammatical gender/, but they customarily declare different values in their value domains.
- Take great care not to alter any other information in the DC and to respect the ownership of the originator of the DC. If you wish to suggest changes or corrections from your perspective, contact the owner and discuss these changes. If you add new values to the conceptual domain, make sure that the new value is only checked for your profile and not for any existing profiles that do not use the new value.
