Notes

Provided by Nuno

  1. CMDI EDM model, assumptions and design decisions
    • Hierarchies/relations in EDM and CMDI

We discussed the two data models, EDM and CMDI, and their mapping. Clarin will continue it's work on the CMDI profile for EDM, which will result in a mapping of EDM metadata into CMDI. It is expected that the EDM to CMDI mapping will be in a mature stage for usage by the end of DSI-2.

  1. Availability of information in EDM/CMDI (according to the definitions

and in practice)

  • Technical metadata
  • Direct resources access

We have discussed the requirements of the Clarin systems to allow the application of the language processing tools of Clarin in the digital objects from Europeana. We have identified that not all digital objects are provided to Europeana under the required conditions. For the next steps, Clarin and INESC-ID will work to identify a set of resources within the Europeana dataset, which have the required conditions, including the required metadata. The application of Europeana's API (particularly the its media search capabilities) will be investigated. The outcome of this line of work, by the end of DSI-2, is expected to be in the form of recommendations from CLARIN.

  1. CMDI in EUDAT

This item will be further discussed during the EUDAT User Forum on the 25th-26th of January, in Helsinki

  1. OAI

Some of the problems of the implementation of Europeana's OAI-PMH will not enable the complete dataset from Europeana to be harvested by Clarin. INESC-ID will support Clarin when the harvesting is attempted, and the a report for the Europeana's API team will be prepared. The report will indicate the specific issues that need to be fixed in Europeana's OAI-PMH server. The report will be ready until the end of DSI-2.

  1. Newspapers metadata and resources

INESC-ID will keep Clarin informed of all outcomes of the work in making the Europeana Newspapers generally available, both in the activities of Europeana Research and from the EUDAT Data Pilot

  1. CMDI in Europeana

Clarin has shown how it could function as an source of cultural heritage objects for Europeana, directly or as a registry of Clarin centers. INESC-ID will consider Clarin and CMDI as an option for further investigation under DSI-2 Subtask 6.9.3 "Linked Data and alternative data acquisition mechanisms".

Addition

By Twan, regarding item 5.

CLARIN will be meeting with Clemens Neudecker of the Berlin state library to get his input and discuss the possibilities for disseminating the newspaper metadata and data within CLARIN (item 5 of the agenda) as well, and intend to report on that and/or run one or more small pilots, possibly even within DSI-2 depending on the findings and the information received from INESC-ID.
