Joint CMDI & Curation taskforces virtual meeting 2019-12-18

  • What?
    • Discussion on CMDI (task forces) strategy
  • Who?
    • Members of the CMDI or the Curation taskforces and other people involved/interested in contributing to CMDI and metadata curation
    • Wednesday 18 December 2019, 10:00 - 11:00 CET (on basis of doodle)
  • Where?

Documents

Preparation

  • TODO: finalise the list of goals, especially the items between brackets (highlighted in yellow in the document) for now; these could probably be a bit more to the point and in any case need better phrasing (before next meeting)
  • TODO: Add any missing tasks (before next meeting)
  • TODO: Add names of persons interested in contributing to the task (before next meeting)

For details, see notes of previous meeting

Agenda

(Tentative)

  1. General task force(s) strategy/operation
    1. Task forces structual organisation
    2. Operational 'lifecycle'
  2. State of CMDI and strategy considerations
    1. Continued review and expansion of CMDI strategy document (focus on goals and tasks)
      1. Goals (finalise)
      2. Tasks (finalise, add names and priorities)

Notes

Task forces organisation

  • There will a broad 'general metadata task force' and a (flexible) number of specific task forces below that
  • Specific task forces meet at their own chosen schedule and report in regular (but less frequent) broad meetings on specific topics (see overview of tasks below)
    • broad meeting every 6~8 weeks
    • smaller task forces report on activities
    • also reports on
      • ongoing CMDI infrastructure development
      • recent metadata support cases and other relevant requests
      • curation activities
  • Mailing lists
    • members of tf-curation mailing list will be added to the tf-cmdi list
    • tf-curation list will be deprecated
    • tf-cmdi descriptive name will be changed to 'Metadata task force'

Goals

Goals finalised for now:

Overall goal: enable and support the creation and exploitation of high-quality metadata, by:

  • Providing working and easy to adopt solutions for
    • Creating and editing metadata instances
    • Sharing and reusing metadata components and profiles for specific use cases
    • Creating new metadata components and profiles based on existing ones
      • Encouraging reuse
      • Retaining as much as possible of the interoperability and discoverability benefits obtained by direct reuse
  • Providing support
    • for essential CMDI features across infrastructure aspects
    • to metadata modellers, authors and consumers
    • to developers aiming to build new solutions on top of CMDI or integration CMDI into existing solution
  • Providing documentation
    • for metadata modellers, authors and consumers, as well as developers
  • Ensuring high metadata quality
  • Continued development of the components of the broader metadata infrastructure for
    • Collaborative modelling workflows (Component registry)
    • Metadata distribution (OAI-PMH, harvesting)
    • Resource discovery (VLO)

Success of the various aspects of the CMDI strategy can be assessed using the following indicators:

  • Good presentation and discoverability via VLO
  • FAIR compliance (see also B centre requirements)
  • Common uses cases are well supported
  • Interoperability with wider research community, and within that especially other connected communities
    • Factor in e.g. DOI, Zenodo, Schema.org, WikiData
    • Interoperability with standards like DataCite, OLAC, DCAT
    • Align with/learn from CESSDA, DARIAH
  • Being able to answer the questions of (aspiring) creators of new metadata in a complete and straightforward way:
    • Which information to provide via metadata?
    • How to create metadata
  • Metadata quality evaluation (curation module)
  • Satisfaction of users (authors, consumers, modellers) of the metadata infrastructure

Tasks

In order of priority, the following tasks are envisioned for the next year. Each task can be carried out by a separate 'specific task force'.

  • First quarter of 2020
    • Complete common use cases evaluation (Andreas & Twan)
    • Core profiles and components (Twan, Alex, Andreas, Marcin, Oddrun, Felix)
    • Vocabularies investigation (Oddrun, Matej, Dieter, Twan)
    • CMDI general documentation rewrite (Alex, Felix, Dieter)
    • Solutions for gathering user feedback/experience/satisfaction (Alex, ...)
  • Ongoing activities
    • Ongoing curation activities (addressing individual issues in Trac and CLARIN-D support system)
  • Later
    • Solutions for collaborative metadata modelling (investigate/design/implement)
    • Design/requirements gathering for CMDI 2.0
